Spring 10-Day Ayurvedic Cleanse

Why Cleanse?

We know that through the sheer pace of modern life, the stresses and pressures we are under, our environment and the foods we eat and drink, we accumulate toxins, or ama in our bodies and minds. In Ayurvedic philosophy it is believed that ama is the root cause of all disease. Signs of ama include poor digestion and elimination, issues with sleep, inability to focus, irritability, anxiety and weight gain. This is why in Ayurveda, cleansing is recommended annually – traditionally it is done in the autumn or spring season, or both. Ayurvedic cleansing brings you into a state of balance physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is considered a “rebirth.”

What is an Ayurvedic Cleanse?

An Ayurvedic cleanse is a gentle, but profound detoxification program for the body, mind, heart and spirit and has three phases. The first phase is called the Preparation Phase, or Purvakarma, where we make dietary changes and begin to integrate daily self-care practices to prepare our bodies for detoxification. The second phase is the Detoxification Phase, or Panchakarma Phase, and during this time you will eat Ayurveda’s nourishing and delicious grain, lentil and vegetable dish, called kitchari, as well as the Green Goddess dish.  Kitchari is simple and easy to make, and with its warmth and spice, it is the perfect food for cleansing. The Green Goddess recipe is a blend of greens (like kale and cilantro) that can be served over the kitchari.  During the detoxification phase, in addition to the daily self-care practices, there are other cleansing techniques that you can choose to integrate: basti (herbal enema) and virechana (purgation). We will discuss these in much more detail when we are together and give you the option to do them. The final phase is the Rejuvenation Phase, where you begin reintroducing foods that you wish to back into your diet, as well as taking herbal supplements to support your transition.

What's the Time Commitment?

We will meet as a group for three evenings over 15 days on Zoom.  The cleanse goes over 10 days, but we will have our first meeting a few days before the cleanse begins to discuss the cleanse, shopping list, meet each other, ask questions, etc. Also, daily, you will need to prepare your meals, and we will provide you with a complete recipe book with recipes for each meal of the cleanse. There are also daily recommended self-care practices, such as self-oil massage, gentle yoga, meditation, a short walk outside, pranayama and journaling. Remember, with yoga, meditation and pranayama, the amount of time you spend doing these practices is less important than doing them consistently. In Ayurveda, consistency is the key.
You are probably already doing these self-care practices sometimes and know the difference that they make to your life. The cleanse will help you to re-commit to them and bring them into your daily routine.

  • Blood Cleanse tablets from Banyan Botanicals
  • Triphala tablets from Banyan Botanicals, PCC or Whole Foods
  • Castor oil
  • Ashwagandha tablets from Banyan Botanicals, PCC or Whole Foods
  • Ghee
  • CCF Tea (the whole seeds of cumin, coriander & fennel)
  • Kitchari ingredients – all can be found at PCC or Whole Foods
